Celebrity magician and author
Formerly known as Magic Babe Ning, Ning is a veritable wonder in the world of magic, as one of very few female magicians. She has performed on the world stage and on international TV (Japan, France, Italy, Middle East, UK, South East Asia) and received multiple awards and accolades from bodies such as the International Magicians Society, International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Singapore Book of Records, among many others. Ning is also a prolific writer with five (and counting) best-selling books under her belt, including her Singapore Literature Prize-nominated autobiography Who Is Magic Babe Ning? You may also have seen Ning on television: she acted in Eat Already (Season 3) and hosted the Channel 5 show Meat & Greed (Season 2). She has also been a TEDx speaker, a panellist at the Singapore Writers’ Festival and she is a committee member of women’s organisation, SCWO.
Dog behaviorist and fitness lifestyle trainer
Marie Choo is a dog behaviourist and trainer and is working part time as a fashion communications lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts. She began running in 2015 to improve her fitness and health, and has gone from being just barely able to run two kilometres to completing marathons all over the world. This year, she will be taking part in the 100km Ultra-Trail Australia in May.
Celebrity makeup artist
Clarence is a makeup artist to international stars like Zhang Ziyi and the Spice Girls. A respected name in the fashion and beauty industry, Clarence has worked on editorials with top fashion magazine and at fashion shows, and is considered an expert in Asian makeup and beauty. Clarence advocates a waste-free lifestyle, eschewing the use of plastic bags and plastic bottles, and valuing simplicity—a philosophy he applies to his makeup technique that has wowed even superstars.
Travel and adventure presenter
Denise is an international travel and adventure presenter. Denise first burst onto the entertainment scene as a Ford supermodel, followed by a career-making turn as a VJ for MTV. She was the first Singaporean to become an MTV VJ and remains the longest-serving one to date. Denise’s presenting career included being a travel and adventure host for Discovery Channel and Discovery TLC. Her work on the Passage series (which included Passage to Malaysia, Passage to Abu Dhabi, Passage to China and Expedition X - The Silk Road Rising that traced the historic Silk Road) won her the coveted Asian Television Awards Best presenter trophy in 2011. Denise is currently working on a new travel series with Discovery TLC and is a fitness and environmental advocate.
Born and raised in Monterey, California, Jimmy T began acting as a teen in junior college, playing Brick Politt in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. After that auspicious start, he was booked for his first national commercial for American Express credit cards. Jimmy is a versatile actor who has worked on film and in television in Asia, Europe and America. His film credits include the award-winning L’Empire Du Tigre, Kung Fu Killer, American Yakuza, Robocop 3 and Showdown In Little Tokyo. He also guest starred in Hollywood TV series like Martial Law, Brooklyn South and JAG. Jimmy is best known for his role as Lt Kenji Kinoshita in the epic World War II serial drama A War Diary, for which he also received a nomination for Best Actor in a Drama at the Asian Television Awards 2002. He has also starred in many Singapore-made television series, including Love Matters, First Mums and The Pupil, and hosted Channel News Asia’s Get Drunk In China, spending five weeks in China introducing its lethal wines to the region.
Owner of Trium Fitness and mother of four
Dawn Sim is the founder of and head teacher at Trium Fitness. Dawn spent most of her teen years as a competitive athlete, and suffered repetitive strains and injuries. One of her coaches introduced her to yoga, which she embraced and has practised for many years. Dawn is a certified yoga teacher, trained pre- and post-natal yoga, a certified Pilates teacher and a certified nutrition and wellness consultant. A mother of four girls aged 2, 6, 9 and 11. Dawn also believes in the importance of eating well to combat health issues. As an advocate for fitness and wellness, Dawn is a regular guests on wellness television programmes, and is interviewed often on these topics. She has taught in fitness clubs and hospitals across Singapore and has also taught while living in France and in the US.
Co-founder, BodytreeGST, Pilates Bodytree and Bodytree Academy
Daniel is a fitness practitioner who co-founded Pilates Bodytree, Bodytree Academy and Bodytree GST. He is a pilates teacher and a gymnastics strength training coach with 20 years of training under his belt. Daniel’s passion is in fitness education: he has been conducting Pilates teacher training programs and anatomy courses since 2008, specialising in pain management and injury prevention.
Chef at Ownself Make Chef
In 2008, former Events Director at Forbes Shen Tan exchanged her business suits for an apron at Maxwell Food Centre when she opened her stall Madam Tan Nasi Lemak. She earned her cooking stripes with her award-winning nasi lemak, lauded by Makansutra and the Business Times’ CEO Hawker Guide. Chef Shen then expanded her repertoire at The Wok & Barrel, creating Mod-Sin (modern Singaporean) dishes like Lamb Char Siew, Ba Chor Mee Pasta, Shendol, Fish Curry Pasta and her signature Beef Rendang Pizza. When she headed Ujong at Raffles Hotel, Chef Shen created dishes like Hae Bee Hiam Mentaiko Capellini and Claypot Rice with Five Spice Pork. She continued in her tradition of Mod-Sin creativity with her current role as Culinary Director of Gastrogig, creating for custom events and pop up events. As chef/owner of private dining experience, Ownself Make Chef, Chef Shen explores Singaporean and South East Asian flavours with her private themed dinners, which bear creative titles such as aPORKalypse and What The Duck.
Author and mother of three
Theresa is a writer whose career has spanned entertainment magazines like 8 Days to international women’s magazines like ELLE, for which she was editor in chief. Today the mother of three runs a writing and editing business called WORD Agency. In 2010, Theresa was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma-in-situ, a type of breast cancer. She began blogging about her experience with cancer, particularly about the lack of early critical illness insurance coverage. For her outreach through her blog, she was nominated for and named one of the winners of the Singapore Woman Award in 2012. In 2013 Theresa’s book about her journey, A Clean Breast was published. Theresa began running as part of her recovery post-cancer, and has since prioritised her fitness and health.
Nanz Chong Komo
CEO, Komo Pte Ltd, Country Distributor, SodaStream Singapore
She began her modelling career when she was just 17, scoring magazine shoots as well as fashion shows for clients like Sony, Takashimaya and Chanel Jewellery. She was the second runner-up in Elite’s Look of the Year competition, and wound up co-hosting the 1988 Seoul Olympics for Hong Kong TV station ATV. At 23, with $9000 of her savings, she started her first retail business: a boutique called Klis. Within nine months, she sold the business for $80,000. She followed up that entrepreneurial adventure with ONE.99Shop, which took Singapore by storm in the late ‘90s. For her acute business sense, she was named Overall Woman Entrepreneur of the Year 2000, and became the poster girl of female entrepreneurship in Singapore. The chain stores were raking in millions yearly before the unfortunate advent of SARS, which saw the end of ONE.99Shop. Nanz resurrected her career with her best-selling 2006 book ONE Business, 99 Lessons, which she followed up with Bringing Out The Entrepreneur In You (2012) and Overcome (2012). Since 2017, Nanz’s company Komo Pte Ltd has been appointed the exclusive distributor for SodaStream in Singapore.
Head coach, GIM Sports
Nabilah M (Coach B) was a national gymnast as a youth. To date she has clocked 15 years in gymnastics, and continues to be involved in Singapore’s gymnastics scene as a mentor and a judge in international competitions. Coach B is the director and head coach of GIM Sports International, a local gymnastics club that teaches gymnastics to children, adults and organisations in Singapore. She was part of the team that bagged the gold for Singapore at the 2005 SEA Games—an achievement that was entered into the Singapore Book of Records.
Working mother and triathlete
Dawn is a full-time working mother of two girls, aged 10 and 15. Her story serves to inspire every working woman with a busy schedule. A school athlete in her teens, she represented her school in basketball, as well as track and field. Once the kids arrived, Dawn settled into what she calls “a mostly sedentary lifestyle”, spending her time on work and her children. However, when she turned 38, her fitness hit rock bottom and she felt she had lost motivation and focus in life. She decided to pick up road cycling, and found a coach to learn freestyle swimming. When a friend suggested that she participate in a triathlon with her, that kickstarted Dawn’s fitness career. Now, Dawn runs with running group ROCKRunners every Saturday morning, while she trains long distance on Sundays. To date, she has completed two half-ironman races, Ironman 70.3 Putrajaya 2015 and Challenge Iskandar 2017, three 3 full marathons, including the Penang Bridge International Marathon in 2016 and numerous half marathons. Dawn most recently ran the Tokyo Marathon in February 2018.
