Most of us don't really know where Black Friday came from. It was a term used by the Philly police in the 1950s to describe the chaos that occurs every year on the day after thanksgiving. The chaos was caused by the numerous people going into the city to watch the big Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday every year. Shoplifters would also take advantage of the mess in stores, causing more trouble for the police.
Now, Black Friday is a term used to describe best time to grab Christmas gifts due to the insanely low deals. Since 1952 in the United States of America, Black Friday is the beginning of the Christmas shopping. As it is the day after Thanksgiving, it is a public holiday in some countries making the sales more accessible during this period, hence making it more 'chaotic'.
Black Friday has been celebrated around the world for many years. California and other states observe “The day after Thanksgiving” as a holiday for state government employees, sometimes in lieu of another federal holiday such as “Columbus Day”. This has become a day when people all around the world shop and make full use of the deals and heavy discounts.
To celebrate Thanksgiving this year, SodaStream Singapore will join in the fun with our Black Friday Sales.
