How to Choose Flavours for Sparkling Water

With so many options available, here are a few things to consider when choosing your next soda syrup for a home carbonation machine.

Sugar Level

One of the most common reasons people switch to sparkling water is to cut down on sugar. It's worth checking the sugar content of any syrup you choose to make sure it's an improvement over the canned sodas you're replacing. SodaStream syrups are formulated with up to 50% less sugar than conventional soft drinks, so you can enjoy the fizz without the guilt.

Note the Artificial Sweetener

Not all sweeteners are created equal. Some drink mixes use sweeteners like aspartame, which certain consumers prefer to avoid. Always read the label carefully to understand what's inside. SodaStream syrups are aspartame-free; many are sweetened with natural options like Stevia, giving you a cleaner, more transparent ingredient list.

Watch for Sodium Content

It's easy to overlook sodium when shopping for flavoured syrups, but it's worth a second glance. Some brands add salt to their drink mixes to enhance flavour, and while a small amount of sodium is generally harmless, it can add up quickly if you're drinking sparkling water throughout the day. Keep an eye on the sodium content per serving, especially if you're watching your daily intake.

Frequently Asked Questions About Drink Syrups

Do SodaStream syrups contain artificial sweeteners?

SodaStream syrups are completely aspartame-free. Classic flavoursare sweetened with sugar along with sucralose, acesulfame potassium, and/or stevia leaf extract, depending on the specific product. Diet and Zero flavours are sweetened with combinations of sucralose, stevia leaf extract, and/or erythritol. We recommend checking the label of each individual flavour for the full ingredient breakdown, as formulations can vary across the range.

How many litres does one bottle make?

Each 440ml bottle of SodaStream syrup makes approximately 9 litres of sparkling drink based on the recommended ratio of one capful of syrup per litre of fizzed water. If you’re trying it for the first time, we recommend starting with half a cap and adjusting to taste. It’s always easier to add more flavour than to dilute an overly strong mix. Using less syrup per serving will also stretch each bottle further, so you may get more than 9 litres depending on your preferred flavour strength.

How long do SodaStream syrups last?

SodaStream syrups have a shelf life of one year from the date of manufacturing. Once opened, store the bottle as directed and use it within a reasonable timeframe to enjoy the best taste.

Can I mix different flavours together?

Absolutely, and that's half the fun. SodaStream encourages you to get creative and mix your favourite syrups to craft your own signature drink. Start with small amounts of each flavour and adjust until you hit the perfect combination.

Do I need to refrigerate the syrups?

Yes. Once opened, SodaStream syrups should be kept refrigerated to preserve their freshness and flavour. Chilling them also ensures every glass tastes just as good as the first.

Should I add the syrup before or after carbonating?

Always carbonate your water first, then add the syrup. Adding any liquid other than plain water before carbonation can cause overflow, damage your machine, and will void your warranty and money-back guarantee. The golden rule is simple: fizz first, flavour second.
