Cosmopolitan Cocktail Recipe

Bright and citrusy, the Cosmopolitan is one of the world’s most well-known cocktails — and arguably a delicious symbol of a night on the town with your girlfriends. Also known as a Cosmo, it enjoyed a pop culture-fuelled spotlight in the 1990’s through HBO series Sex and the City as the drink of choice for protagonist Carrie Bradshaw and her friends. Said to be created to give the classic Martini a twist that would appeal to women, the blush-tinted Cosmopolitan is usually ordered as an aperitif and served in a martini glass.

A Cosmopolitan Cocktail is the perfect antidote to a long work week. Whether you enjoy them with friends or sip one solo, the cocktail’s refreshing flavours of vodka, Cointreau, cranberry juice and lime juice will lift your spirits.

Additional Notes:

  • Sweet-sour Flavours
This cocktail is easy to recreate should your pantry be missing the key ingredients. No cranberry juice? In the shaker, muddle some tart fruit such as raspberries, or use more lime juice and add a splash of grenadine. No Cointreau? Triple Sec or Grand Marnier will do nicely too.
  • Prefer a boozier version?
Add champagne or your favourite Prosecco.
  • Creating a non-alcoholic version for the kids?
Achieve the same fruity flavours with soda water or tonic water.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQ)

When did the Cosmopolitan become the drink de rigueur?
There’s a longstanding debate over who actually created the cocktail. It is widely credited to a bartender in New York called Toby Cecchini, who served it in the 1980’s at a restaurant called The Odeon. Others say it’s a spin-off from a 1930’s cocktail called the Kamikaze, which contains the same ingredients except cranberry juice.
Why was the Cosmopolitan invented?
It’s been said that this blush-tinted drink was created to give the classic Martini a twist that appealed to women.
When’s the best time to enjoy it?
Any time of the week, but also especially on National Cosmopolitan Day on 5 May.
Is there a different version of the classic cocktail?
There are several, in fact. These include the White Cosmopolitan (featuring white cranberry juice and St-Germain elderflower liquor), Pomegranate Cosmopolitan (featuring pomegranate instead of cranberry juice) and Blue Cosmopolitan (featuring blue curacao).
What other creative garnishes can be used?
Consider adding sugar to the rim of your martini glasses before serving, or drop in some colourful edible flowers. Alternatively, try a combo of mint leaves and skewered fresh cranberries.
